How to use this flooring calculator
- 1Enter the length of your room in meters or feet.
- 2Enter the width of your room in meters or feet.
- 3Select the type of flooring material you plan to use.
- 4Enter the waste percentage (typically 5-10%) for cuts and mistakes.
- 5Click "Calculate" to see the floor area, required material, and boxes needed.
The calculation is based on: Floor Area = Length × Width. Required Material = Floor Area × (1 + Waste Percentage / 100). Boxes Needed is calculated based on standard packaging sizes for each material type.
Understanding Flooring Calculations
Floor Area Calculation
First, calculate the total area of your room by multiplying the length by the width. This gives you the total surface area that needs to be covered with flooring.
Waste Allowance
Always add a waste allowance when purchasing flooring. This accounts for: material that gets cut off during installation, mistakes, and future repairs. For most standard installations, a 10% waste allowance is recommended.
Boxes Needed
Flooring materials are typically sold in boxes or packs. Each box covers a specific area. Our calculator estimates the number of boxes needed based on standard packaging sizes: Hardwood (~1.86 sqm/box), Laminate (~1.86 sqm/box), Vinyl (~2.00 sqm/box), and Carpet (~15 sqm/roll).
Calculation Formula
Floor Area
Floor Area = Length × Width
Required Material
Material = Floor Area × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)
Boxes Needed
Boxes = Ceiling(Material ÷ Coverage per Box)
Example Calculation
Sample Project
- • Room Length: 5 meters
- • Room Width: 4 meters
- • Material: Hardwood
- • Waste Percentage: 10%
Calculate Floor Area
5 × 4 = 20.00 sqm
Calculate Required Material
20 × 1.10 = 22.00 sqm
Calculate Boxes Needed
22 ÷ 1.86 = 11.83 → 12 boxes
Flooring Tips
Acclimate Your Flooring
Let hardwood and laminate flooring acclimate to the room's humidity and temperature for 48-72 hours before installation.
Leave Expansion Gaps
Leave a 10-15mm expansion gap around the perimeter of the room to accommodate seasonal movement.
Choose the Right Underlayment
Use proper underlayment for your flooring type. It provides cushioning, sound reduction, and moisture protection.
Install Perpendicularly
Install flooring perpendicular to the floor joists for maximum structural stability.
